Electric scooter or electric bike: which should you choose?

When it comes to choosing between an electric scooter and an electric bike for your daily commute, there are several criteria to consider. Here's a comparison based on information from the KissMyWheels and CleanRider websites.

1. Comfort and ergonomics

  • Electric bikes : Electric bikes are generally more comfortable for longer journeys thanks to their saddle, ergonomic riding position and the ability to carry heavier loads (bags, shopping). It's also more stable and better suited to uneven roads.
  • Electric scooter The scooter is ideal for shorter journeys or in dense urban areas. Its lightness and manoeuvrability make it easy to weave in and out of traffic, but it can be less comfortable over long distances or uneven surfaces.

2. Speed and range

  • Electric bikes : In general, electric bikes offer a better range, often between 50 and 100 km, and allow you to maintain a higher average speed of around 25 to 30 km/h without too much effort.
  • Electric scooter : Depending on the model, electric scooters can reach similar speeds, but their range is often shorter, around 20 to 50 km. They are therefore better suited to shorter journeys.

3. Practicality and storage

  • Electric bikes More cumbersome, an electric bike requires adequate parking space, whether at home or at work. However, it is often more difficult to transport it on public transport or to store it in a small flat.
  • Electric scooter Electric scooters are particularly compact. Easily folded, they can be taken on public transport and stored in a small space without too much difficulty.

4. Security

  • Electric bikes : Thanks to its size and presence on the road, an electric bike is often more visible to other road users. What's more, its greater stability makes it a safer choice on paved or uneven roads.
  • Electric scooter Although smaller and more manoeuvrable, scooters can be less visible and more sensitive to obstacles on the road. However, in urban environments, it can make it easier to avoid traffic jams and other hazards.

5. Cost

  • Electric bikes : The initial investment for an electric bike is generally higher than for a scooter, but the costs can be justified by the greater range, durability and additional features.
  • Electric scooter : Less expensive to buy, a scooter is a more economical option in the short term. However, depending on use, maintenance costs may increase, especially if the scooter is used intensively.

The choice between an electric scooter and an electric bike depends on your specific needs. If you're looking for a practical means of transport that's easy to store and ideal for short urban journeys, a scooter is probably the best option. On the other hand, if you're looking for comfort, stability and range for longer journeys, an electric bike might be better for you.
