Choisir la Taille de Son Vélo et la Taille des Pneus

Choosing the right bike size is essential to guarantee comfort and performance on your outings. Here's a practical guide to help you select the ideal size for your bike and tyres.

1. Choosing the size of your bike

Understanding bike sizes

Bikes are generally measured by frame size, expressed in centimetres or inches. Here are the steps to follow to determine the size that suits you best:

Measure Your Height

The first step is to measure your height. Here's a rough guide:

  • Less than 1.60 m Frame size 14-16 inches (S).
  • Between 1.60 m and 1.75 m Frame size 16-18 inches (M).
  • Between 1.75 m and 1.85 m Frame size 18-20 inches (L).
  • Over 1.85 m Frame size 20-22 inches (XL).

Try cycling

When you try out a bike, make sure you can put your feet flat on the ground when you sit on the saddle. It should also be comfortable to get on and off the bike.

2. Choose tyre size

Understanding tyre dimensions

Tyre size is also crucial for comfort and performance. Tyres are often indicated by two numbers, such as 28×1.5 or 700x35C. Here's how to interpret these dimensions :

  • First figure Tyre diameter (expressed in inches or millimetres).
  • Second figure Tyre width (expressed in inches or millimetres).

Tyre size according to bike type

Road bikes

  • Dimensions : Often between 23 and 32 mm wide.
  • Council : Opt for thinner tyres to maximise speed on the road.

MOUNTAIN BIKE

  • Dimensions Generally between 1.9 and 2.5 inches wide.
  • Council Choose wider tyres with studs for better grip on uneven terrain.

Urban Bikes

  • Dimensions Approximately 28 to 32 mm wide.
  • Council : Choose puncture-resistant tyres for everyday use.

3. Check compatibility

Before buying tyres, make sure they are compatible with your bike. Check the manufacturer's recommendations on the maximum tyre size for your model of bike.
