The popularity of electric bikes in Switzerland has soared in recent years. Combining practicality, respect for the environment and the pleasure of riding, electrically assisted bicycles (EABs) are winning over more and more Swiss, from city dwellers to mountain enthusiasts. Here's an overview of the reasons for this craze, the types of motor available, the regulations in force, and the models to consider for your next purchase.

Pourquoi un Tel Essor en Suisse de vélo électrique ?

  1. Varied geography : Switzerland, with its mountains and valleys, offers varied and sometimes demanding terrain. Electric bikes make it easy to overcome the differences in altitude, making travel more accessible to everyone.
  2. Ecological awareness : The Swiss are particularly sensitive to environmental issues. Electric bicycles are an environmentally-friendly alternative to the car for everyday journeys.
  3. Cycling infrastructure : The country has an excellent cycling infrastructure, making it easy to use bicycles in both urban and rural areas.
  4. Subsidies and Incentives : Some regions offer subsidies for the purchase of electric bikes, making them more affordable.

Motor types

  1. Central engine (pedals) Located at the bottom bracket, it offers more natural assistance and better weight distribution. Ideal for hilly terrain.
  2. Motor in the front wheel The simpler and often less expensive system is common on entry-level models. However, it can result in a less pleasant feeling of traction.
  3. Motor in the rear wheel Provides better traction and is often used on road bikes and electric mountain bikes for a more direct pushing sensation.

Maximum speed and regulations

In Switzerland, regulations distinguish between two types of electric bicycle:

  1. Light electric bikes Motorcycles: Limited to an assistance speed of up to 25 km/h and a maximum motor power of 500W. They can be used without a licence and do not require special insurance.
  2. Fast electric bikes (S-Pedelecs) Mopeds: offering assistance at speeds of up to 45 km/h and motor power of up to 1000W. To use them, you need a category M driving licence, compulsory insurance and you must wear a helmet.

Gamme de Prix de vélos électriques

Electric bikes vary considerably in price depending on the brand, type of motor, battery and components. Here's an estimate of the price ranges:

  • Entry-level Price: CHF 1,500 to 2,500. Often equipped with motors in the front wheel and medium-capacity batteries.
  • Mid-range CHF 2,500 to 4,000. Typically models with central motors, better batteries and top-quality components.
  • Top of the range CHF 4,000 to 8,000 and more. Includes electric mountain bikes and electric road bikes with high-performance motors and large-capacity batteries.
